Skills

1. Adaptability

This ePortfolio includes documents all throughout my time at Miami University. The documents are unedited from their final submission. This is because I wanted to show you how I have improved my learning throughout the years. I learned to write for a wider audience and get more concise.

I have adapted to other aspects outside of my assignments. I have been the Business Manager for Happy Captive Magazine, a literary magazine on campus. There are very few non-English majors on staff and so I have adapted to convey my perspectives on the pieces. I also had to adapt to learn about the publishing world.

My biggest part demonstration of adaptability is how I had to transfer from doing school completely online to in-person. Many people were impacted during the most recent pandemic. I decided to take my freshman year completely online from my home in Indiana. This added the additional struggle of not being close enough to meet with people. So as someone who was not originally tech-savvy, I had to learn how to communicate online with my professors and peers. I still participated in activities and found ways to complete research. Then I had to transfer all my skills into person in my sophomore year of college and adapt to being in-person. This demonstrates my ability to adapt regardless of the circumstances.

2. Collaboration

This ePortofilo includes team projects and individual-based projects. I strive to be a good team member regardless of the situation. This includes finding ways to communicate, being an active listener, preparing in advance, and so much more. I have participated in two year-long research group project classes.

The first one was my First Year Research Experience (FYRE) class. We created a project to learn about how people view research at Miami University. I was in charge of keeping everything on schedule and communicating with the professors. I also was an active member in creating times to meet up (online) and creating an environment to help people feel comfortable.

The second class was my Behavioral Undergraduate Research Program. We created a project using transgenic mice to learn about the reward system relating to alcohol and nicotine. I was in charge of finding additional research and being aware of what the literature says to help model our research. I also was in charge of the Excel datasheets. I made sure they were always up to date, easily read, and the equations were working properly. Additionally, I helped out by teaching people how to use Excel so they could work the sheets.

I did all of this in addition to the aspects of conducting research and being a good team member for both projects.

3. Time Management

There are only 24 hours in a day. This is a non-negotiable fact. I have a lot of duties and the only way it gets done is if I am on top of my work. I strive to turn in my assignments early and completed them to the best of my ability. Having time management abilities are the only way that I can get things done to my standards, have time for extracurriculars, and have time for myself. All of these assignments had schedules related to them and due dates set by myself.
